Global food giant Surya Foods has launched a range of popular Japanese sides and snacks, spanning gyoza, yakitori and bao buns, following a major refresh of its Akira brand. The new frozen lines have secured national retail listings with Asda and Morrisons and are an extension of Akira’s sushi rice range.

UK households are becoming increasingly keen to cook Japanese at home, inspired by their favourite Japanese high street restaurant chains, like Wagamama. Once mysterious, terms like sushi, miso, katsu and yakitori are now common parlance among foodie brits, with supermarket sales of Japanese food on the rise. Surya’s move comes just weeks after Waitrose launched a new Japanese-inspired own-brand food range, Japan Menyū – with products spanning ready meals, centrepieces, sides and snacks.
The Akira frozen range features ten new lines and is now available at selected Asda and Morrisons stores and includes:
Available at Asda:

Akira Chicken Gyoza, 240g RRP £2.50
Akira Vegetable Gyoza, 240g RRP £2.50

Speaking about the launch, Harry Dulai, Surya Foods Managing Director said: “Japanese cuisine is now widely available in supermarkets, restaurants and takeaways across the UK. It is clear Japanese cuisine has become a much-loved addition to the British menu.”
The Akira range was launched in 2016, offering traditional-style sushi rice into independent retail. It is now expanding into national retail with a swathe of exciting frozen NPD.
Surya Foods produces the Korean brand Sun Hee – one of the first Korean brands to enter major UK supermarkets. It recently announced a raft of NPD, spurred on by the nation’s growing appetite for Korean food. It is also behind the UK’s No.1 dry rice brand Laila basmati rice 1 , as well as Thai Dragon – the UK’s favourite Thai sriracha sauce brand 2 .
